Consulting Historian
I am a former lecturer in history at Queen’s University Belfast. My work focuses on Nineteenth and Twentieth Century British, Irish, and European history, with a specialism in the Cold War. A published academic and experienced educator, I have been a popular public speaker for over fifteen years. I lecture in history and politics at City Lit in London and am an Expert Tour Guide at the Imperial War Museums.

I call myself a 'consulting historian' - a title inspired by one of my great heroes, Sherlock Holmes. When Holmes first explains his work to Dr Watson, he states that he is the world’s only consulting detective: someone others come to when every other avenue has failed. I rather like that idea. As a consulting historian, I offer analysis, interpretation, and perspective that people seek when they want to understand the past in new and revealing ways. It’s a small homage to Holmes, whose combination of curiosity, logic, and imagination mirrors much of what good historical work requires.
